‘Travels Through Two Paintboxes‘ – An Exhibition of Artwork
We are delighted to invite you to our next exhibition of artwork by talented artists Sally Black and Chrissie Moss.
Sally paints primarily in oils as she loves the smell, feel and versatility of the medium. This versatility allows her to closely examine and render a whole variety of subjects, mostly from the natural world, whilst exploring colour, shine, reflection and pattern.
Over the past year or so Sally has started painting on ceramics (which her husband, also new to clay, produces in his cold, cold shed -Thank you Steve!). Working in three dimensions involves tackling very different challenges of space and composition but the process and end results are also very satisfying.
Chrissie has worked using many mediums throughout her career, including inks, pencil and watercolour. For this exhibition she has revisited gouache, which was the first medium she used in her early career. Gouache is more permanent than watercolour, opaque and also dries very quickly with unique drying characteristics for each colour. She uses blooms and washes along with impasto techniques to achieve the finished pieces on coloured grounds.
Chrissie has painted a collection of birds and animals who visit or live on the Island for this exhibition. Birds feature heavily and she is very conscious of the huge decline in bird populations. Overfishing, pollution and changing sea temperatures are pushing seabirds to extinction and even birds that were once considered common and widespread are rapidly declining. Images of these birds may be the only way future generations will be able to see them, but sadly never watch them.
